New ways of benefitting from fermentation

A new company has emerged and FermBiotics ApS is its name. Their innovative product uses the fermentation process to create a completely new food ingredient and dietary supplement category.

FermBiotics is a food ingredient and dietary supplement company with an aim to produce sustainable and healthy food products based on lactic acid fermentation of plant and marine material such as canola and seaweed. We have gained knowledge from microbiome studies, and combined with hands-on knowledge of fermentation production, our vision is to produce fermented plant and lactic acid bacteria based products as food ingredients and dietary supplements.

In recent years, fermented food products have made a comeback and are of high value for many. For most people, fermented foods like sauerkraut and kimchi are not considered the most appealing types of foods. However, research exploring these and other fermented products on gut, brain, and body health has revitalised public interest.

What are fermented products?

Fermentation is a natural process that has been used for thousands of years to preserve food with lactic acid bacteria. The sugar from food products are used by lactic acid bacteria to make lactic acids, which create the characteristic low pH level and preserve the food. In addition, many healthy compounds are produced during the fermentation process.

During fermentation of canola and seaweed, lactic acid bacteria modify thousands of compounds (e.g. carbohydrates, lipids, and natural products). This mix of lactic acid bacteria, plant and seaweed material, as well as the modified compounds (via fermentation), results in an innovative product with healthy properties.

The main reason for introducing a new player in this market is the benefits provided by these products, as well as the need for a larger variety of alternative products. The benefits of the products are many. They combine the effects of probiotics, prebiotics, and bioactives in a completely new food ingredient and dietary supplement category we call FermBiotics.

Within the next year or two, we will be ready with a product for sale in the food ingredient and dietary supplement B2B market. Possible customers could be leading companies in the food industry where our product is an ingredient for existing products, e.g. sports energy drinks, granola, muesli, smoothies, yoghurt, seasoning, etc. Other channels could be in the health segment for dietary supplements.

With in-depth knowledge about human intestinal health and the production of lactic acid fermented products, the idea arose to combine the two and launch human health products. Our CEO Søren Kjærulff is backed by a dedicated sales and marketing team and a board of directors with extensive knowledge on lactic acid fermentation from different branches, as well as great top management skills.
